Historical background
There are a few hypotheses concerning the origin of the name Petrevene. Some assume it origins from Petar( the name of the head of first kin that inhabited the village), others think it comes from the name of a monk called Petar. Most likely the name comes from the Greek word “petros” which means “stone”. Petrevene is famous for its stone-pits.
Before the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule the inhabitants of Petrevene were mostly Muslims. After the Liberation (1878) all Muslims moved out. The first school was built in 1891. In 1918 Yosif Benchev founded a community center called “Probuda”.
